USAAF Reconnaissance Photography During the Second World War

The United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) reconnaissance aircraft flew hundreds of sorties over England during the Second World War. The Historic England Archive holds a USAAF collection of over 20,000 photographs that records airfields, military bases, towns, and countryside in England between 1943 and 1944.

RAF Bradwell Bay, Essex, 25 January 1944. The airfield’s location close to the Essex coast meant that it was often used by damaged aircraft or aircraft low on fuel returning from sorties over enemy territory. It was also the only fighter airfield where the Fog Investigation and Dispersal Operation (FIDO) system was used. Pipelines along the sides of the runway carried fuel which were lit when fog obscured the airfield. The heat warmed the air and evaporated the fog, allowing pilots to see where to land.
